1.Orange scarf by John Smedley
I got this large (190 cm×80 cm) knitted John Smedley scarf at the Shinjuku Isetan Men’s Building.
John Smedley is a long-standing British knitwear brand with more than 230 years of history. It sells fine cardigans and sweaters—classic, simple designs made with quality cotton and merino wool.
This scarf is 100% merino wool. The thin, light material will keep you warm while being easy to pack away. For the colder months this is an accessory I can’t live without.
Faced with a variety of color options, I hesitated when my stylist Scarlet recommended the orange. She pointed out that winter menswear is a sea of neutral blacks and grays and blues, and a splash of bright color would make all the difference in making a fashion statement.
2.Mont-bell gloves
These are “Clima Tweed" gloves from Mont-bell. The gloves are made with sweat-absorbing stretchable fleece that has been given a tweed-like look.
Like scarves, Silicon Valley weather is for the most part too mild for gloves; if I owned a pair they stayed in a drawer unless I was going ice skating or skiing.
When I began my search for gloves for winter, I had my sights set on some fine leather gloves. Scarlet’s advice, however, was to spend no more than 5,000 yen on my first pair, as it was quite possible that I would lose one (or both) gloves through normal daily use.
