1.Dotted black bowtie by Brooks Brothers

This black bowtie with white dots is something I bought at Seibu Shibuya Department Store (aka Shibu-Sei). In Japan, bowties are sometimes called “chou-necktie” (chou meaning butterfly).
Bowties are usually reserved for dinner parties and other formal occasions, but for our #BackToSchool episode, I decided to dress like my middle school principal.
This is not a clip-on but a proper self-tie bowtie. There were pictures and instructions up on Brooks Brothers’ official website, but as I am always in a mild panic to change into my wardrobe for our tapings, I had little faith in my ability to properly tie a bowtie under pressure. I asked the kind saleswoman at Shibu-sei to pre-tie the bowtie for me, so I could just hook it on using the adjustable strap.
Of course, it goes without saying that after our taping, I went home, stood in front of my full-body mirror, and practiced how to properly tie a bowtie.
