Overview

1.Black double-breasted suit by Kashiyama the Smart Tailor

Image

This is something I ordered at Kashiyama the Smart Tailor’s Hiroo branch back in October. (Together with the black vest I wore on the 12/6 show, the suit was 88,000 yen plus tax.)

I chose a mid-range black fabric with subtle black stripes, not quite as fancy as the higher-end ones I’ve been experimenting with recently, but a step above their lowest-priced options. Judging by the finished product, they’ve undersold and overdelivered.

This time around I wanted to try something a little different from the classic styles I’d had made before, so I requested something in a slimmer fit. Not only is the overall shape slimmer, the length of the jacket and the pants are on the shorter side. It feels very “current". The slim fit is certainly stylish, but I also can’t shake the feeling that the comfort inherent to a quality suit is being sacrificed for the sake of style.

In any case, my first interview on this day was with actor Katherine Waterston, and the moment I shook her hand I was glad I’d decided to suit up in this particular suit of armor.

2.White dress shirt by Kashiyama the Smart Tailor

This is also something I ordered at Kashiyama the Smart Tailor’s Hiroo branch back in October (9900 yen plus tax). 100% cotton twill fabric—twill is characterized by diagonal parallel ribs—semi-wide collar, French front (no front placket), silver-lipped pearl oyster buttons, and French cuffs. The fabric is wrinkle resistant and easy to launder at home—anybody who needs to wear white dress shirts for work can do with several of these shirts.

Kashiyama the Smart Tailor is a new business started by major Japanese apparel maker Onward Kashiyama in 2017. They far exceeded their projected sales, and have since announced that they will be expanding into North America and China. Fast fashion has blown up over the past decade, but now we’ve entered an era where consumers want more than low prices and convenience—they want quality products tailored to their needs, even if it means dishing out a little bit more cash.

Kashiyama the Smart Tailor offers made-to-measure shirts in three price ranges. They have a basic line of fabrics starting at 6,900 yen, an easy care line from 8,900 yen, and import fabrics from 12,000 yen. This shirt is from their easy care line of wrinkle-free fabrics, which can easily be laundered at home—just straighten out after washing and hang to dry, and no need to iron.
